Universitat Pompeu Fabra Barcelona

Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) was founded in 1990 by the Catalan government with the aim of creating a public university focused on academic excellence and contributing to the country’s development. To achieve this goal, over the years, UPF has carried out all of its activities in accordance with strict quality criteria and has created a model of an urban university that is intimately linked to the city of Barcelona. As a university, we have been selective in the areas of knowledge that we have focused on in order to specialize primarily in research and training related to the various dimensions of the human being, including biology, communication and social phenomena. Our relatively small size, which we have maintained despite some growth, has emerged as one of our defining traits, and an eminently positive one at that, as it has allowed us to preserve the ideal size for the formation of a cohesive academic community, in which academic and administrative units have a sense of belonging to the same institution and of sharing the same values.

UPF is a public, international and research-intensive university that, in just twenty-five years, has earned a place for itself among the best universities in Europe. Awarded with a CEI label (International Excellence Campus) by the Spanish Ministry of Education, the University also figures in some of the most influential rankings.

Global indicators:

  • International Excellence Campus (Spanish Ministry of Education, 2010)
  • 38th of the world in economics by QS World Ranking 2018
  • 57th highest ranked university in the world in economics and business (1st in Spain and 15th in Europe) by Times Higher Education 2018
  • Among the 200 top universities in the world in art and design, accounting and finance, law, politics and international studies, and sociology by QS World Ranking 2018
  • Highest rate of performance in the Spanish system: 89% (2016-2017 academic year)
  • One of the twenty European universities with the most projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC, 2017)
  • Most productive university in Spain (Times Higher Education ranking, 2018)
  • High satisfaction rate (91%) and job placements (90%) among graduates (AQU Catalunya, 2017)

UPF structures its studies on three main fields of knowledge, closely interconnected and structured on three campuses:

Moreover, in order to promote research and transfer activities undertaken by university researchers and provide them with greater international visibility, the University is developing the UPF Research Park in the fields of social sciences, humanities, communication and information technologies. The UPF Research Park, which develops its activity at Ciutadella and Poblenou campuses, coordinates its activities in the fields of health and life sciences with the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, located on the Mar campus.
